Update #2: PS3 users will receive the 5 new prestige levels in the next patch on Feb 28th

Update #1: Robert Bowling announced that along with Overwatch, “5 new prestige levels for all players” were added to Modern Warfare 3 on Xbox 360. The patch size is 5MB.

After receiving two maps in January, Piazza and Liberation, Modern Warfare 3 has received its third and only Elite drop for the month in the new map, Overwatch.

Overwatch is now available for paid Elite members on Xbox 360. In order to download it, you have to access the multiplayer portion of the game to select the ‘store’ option, then select Download Elite Content. The download size of the new map is 89.11MB.

The new map has been added to the Elite playlists’ map rotation. The following gamemodes are available as it was the case since January:
  • Elite TDM
  • Elite Kill Confirmed
  • Elite Domination
  • Elite Search and Destroy
  • Elite Objectives
  • Elite Hardcore Ricochet Mosh Pit

PS3 premium Elite members will be getting the first two drops, Piazza and Liberation, on February 28th. Overwatch hasn’t been dated yet on PS3.

Non-Elite subscribers will be able to buy the first collection of DLC in March, which will pack in multiple drops.

Battlefield 3 Developer Reveals Further Patch Details and Updates

You may have seen a recent list of upcoming weapon changes making its way to Battlefield 3 floating around. If not, check it out right here. However, there are still some other patch details you may not yet know. Luckily, we’ve gathered a number of fresh pieces of info straight from Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz, as well as some updates to the already existing tweaks.

It was brought up via a reddit conversation that the jet guns vs helicopters should be nerfed. Added to this statement was the concern of a jet’s ability to simply ram into the helicopter if it happens to be unsuccessful with its cannon. Thankfully, Kertz responded that “both issues are addressed.” In response, one fan mentioned that both aircrafts being destroyed in the crash would be great. Kertz answered, “bingo.”

Speaking of the usefulness of the underbarrel grenade launcher attachment, some agreed that there’s currently not enough of a time difference in switching to the launcher between a weapon that has the underbarrel attached, and one that doesn’t. However, Kertz clarified, “not after this update it’s not.” Meaning, the switch to the underbarrel grenade launcher will likely see an increase in speed in the next update.

When it comes to weapon stat updates, Kertz mentioned that he “found a way to keep 95 damage on the M98B without making it OP.” (These numbers are soon to be updated in the tweak list.) One fan asked, “what makes a bolt gun with 5 round mag cap so OP you have to nerf it?” Kertz answered, “new mechanics. But it wasn’t ever a nerf and now it won’t look that way either.”

Few have been worried about the SCAR-H carbine, which is to receive an accuracy buff in the next update. Before some of the latest patches, this weapon was considered to be rather over-powered and it is hoped that it will not end up being the case again. It was asked if the SCAR-H would keep its current max damage which is at 30. Kertz clarified, “it stays at 30. When it was at 34 it was clearly superior to other carbines. It’s more accurate, has longer range, and with the recoil buff it’s more controllable.”

Call of Duty Coming to PlayStation Vita in 2012

Along with the official reveal of PS Vita, which was known as NGP at the time, several games were announced for the device including Call of Duty. However, it was unclear as to when the PS Vita version of Call of Duty will come out.

In an interview with Game Trailers, Sony’s Senior Vice President of PlayStation brand marketing, Guy Longworth, confirmed that a Call of Duty game will be released for PS Vita this year. He stated, “In the Autumn, [my kids] are really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita, and that’s going to be an absolute game changer for the platform.”

It is unknown at this point weather PS Vita will receive a brand new Call of Duty title, or a portable port of this year’s rumored Black Ops 2. Another possibility would be a remake of a previous Call of Duty.

If it’s going to be a remake, which game in the series would like to play on the go?

CoD Developer Seeks Balance Between “Quickscopers” and “Hardscopers”

Posted by News Writer in Homepage News

Posted Image

David Vonderhaar, Gameplay Designer at Treyarch, sits down with Call of Duty fans in an attempt to find peace in the war between “quickscopers” and “hardscopers”. First, a quick definition of terms: A “quickscoper” can be considered someone who fires a high-powered rifle (usually a bolt-action sniper rifle in this case) immediately after acquiring a target using the game’s built-in crosshairs, taking little to almost no time to aim down the the sights of the rifle scope; a risky but efficient maneuver. “Hardscopers” seek targets in the more traditional sense of scanning the battlefield while aimed down the sights of a rifle scope and firing from this scoped state, usually from an advantageous position. Along with the rise of quickscoping — a technique that caught some attention possibly during the CoD 2 era, but gained commercial popularity during Modern Warfare 2 — came the controversial debate of whether it can be considered a legitimate technique, or does it exploit the mechanics of a first-person shooter, giving an unfair advantage to the user? Call of Duty developers, Treyarch, made conscious effort to keep 2010′s Black Ops free of such “exploitations”, while Infinity Ward’s recent Modern Warfare 3 embraced it with open arms.

In a conversation with Call of Duty fans, Vonderhaar stated, “I’d like to sit down with the worlds best drag & quickscopers and those who despise it and find something directly in the middle.” He continued, “ADS [Aim Down Sight] sway as well as the ADS and hipfire aim assist (ranges) are tunable on a per gun level. Let’s do this.” To get down to specifics, he then proposed, “.4 ADS raise time. No ‘random bullet.’ Limited hip fire aim assist (MW1 was 1000 inches of hip fire aim assist). Thoughts?” He then clarified that “0.4 is the average on a MW1 style sniper.” Some fans have expressed concern over receiving only a hit marker when achieving a clear shot to the chest in Black Ops. Vonderhaar explained that this is common “when you are used to ‘chest’ being all the same thing.” However, he admits, ”we wanted it to be a precision shot. Upper torso or head but it was probably too confusing in the end.” It “also had to do with penetration settings,” he added. “You can’t hit a guy in the chest without hitting his arms and hands and sometimes gun first,” which may have added to players’ frustrations. Vonderhaar was also asked if the possibility of removing aim assist was optional, something that many quickscope nay-sayers would argue is the source of their frustration. He replied, “Yes. It’s now possible to remove aim (hip and ads) from a gun. He also admitted, “the gun not shooting straight till 100% scoped in caused a lot of confusion and frustration for snipers.” To close, Vonderhaar stated these words: “Balance. That place in the middle where everyone is equally pissed off. Thanks for sharing your passion with me. Reading every reply.”

Modern Warfare 3 Patch 1.09 to Bring New Prestige Levels, Music Volume Update, and Theater Fixes

Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling has revealed some of the additions and fixes that the next title update, patch 1.09, will include for Modern Warfare 3.

Recently, five new prestige levels were added to the PC version of Modern Warfare 3 with the latest update to the platform. Interestingly, the PC version also received an additional five prestige emblems to bring the tally of prestige levels to 20. Robert Bowling promised that Xbox 360 and PS3 users will also receive the new levels; however, it was unclear if it would be via a hotfix or patch 1.09. Now, Modern Warfare 3′s creative strategist explained that “it should be added in the next title updates for those platforms [Xbox 360 and PS3],” but unfortunately he doesn’t have a firm release date at the moment. Some fans, including MP1st readers, were put off by the decision of adding new prestige levels to MW3, Robert Bowling argued that “its nice to have an option to keep going further, even if you choose not to do it.”

Also, “HD video uploads for PS3 are currently planned in an upcoming title update for MW3,” according to Bowling. Further, an Infinity Ward developer has confirmed that music volume issue will be fixed soon, stating “the patch containing the music adjustment is going into submission [presumably, the console manufacturers certification process] very soon.” Hopefully, after the next title update, you’ll be able to turn down the in game music in order to rely more on the sounds of the enemies’ footsteps, reloads, and such. a new trailer was released for the upcoming map, Overwatch.

Stepto announces his resignation from Microsoft

With a gaming infrastructure as large as Microsoft's Xbox LIVE, there are always going to be employees who are well known. One of those employees is Stephen Toulouse, also known by the nickname of 'Stepto', and he has been the Director of Policy enforcement on Xbox LIVE. He has announced his plans to leave the company on his personal blog.

According to the blog, Toulouse feels too comfortable with the company, having worked in Microsoft for the past 17 years. During his time with the company, Stepto has written a book chronicling his time with the company, entitled A Microsoft Life. Toulouse speaks of his interest in writing, and mentions his final day working for Microsoft will be February 15th, with his plans for the 16th being to visit his family.

Toulouse also mentions his intentions to take his experience freelance, so he could still be around in the world of videogaming. It would hardly be surprising for him, with his years of experience, to work with Vox Games and The Verge, since the two have been going on a hiring spree and picking up names like Justin McElroy, previously of Joystiq. If you have already read A Microsoft Life and enjoyed it, Toulouse speaks of his plans for finishing a second book.

In an unexpected act, Stepto has also provided his resignation email for readers of his blog and news sites. Names have been removed to maintain privacy, and it helps give an idea of the experiences the company has given him.

[indent]Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen.

On a warm Dallas day April 11th, 1994, I grabbed my keys and wallet and headed for the front door of my apartment. I stopped short when I realized I was going to need my building access badge that I had just been given that previous Friday. I walked into my bedroom and grabbed the badge, making a mental note to remember to keep it with my wallet at night so I wouldn’t forget it in the morning. It was my first full day at Microsoft. I was 21.

Since that day (very nearly without exception) I’ve carried a Microsoft badge with me basically where ever I went. That April day I was a contractor with Microsoft, A-Stepto. The following January I was hired as a Microsoft FTE and issued a new email name, SToulouse. Because everyone had already started calling me Stepto, my manager had them change it to Stepto. It stuck.

I wrote in my book about some of the amazing things I’ve been a part of at this company. Shipping Windows 95. Traveling the world in the training organization teaching support engineers about upcoming technologies. Being a security PM and spokesperson for the entire company on security issues. Getting to play a part in the success of Xbox, Xbox LIVE, and Kinect. I can’t possibly conceive of the good fortune, challenges, and rewards I’ve gotten from almost 18 years at Microsoft happening to me anywhere else.

But I’m going to go see just to make sure.

February 15th 2012 will be my last day at Microsoft. My reasons for leaving are complex and personal, but the parting could not be more amicable. I continue to believe this place makes great technology, and I am absolutely thrilled for the future of Xbox and Xbox LIVE.

What are my plans? I don’t have any! That’s both scary and exciting. Well, it’s also a bit untrue. The day after I leave I’m headed out to join my Internet friends on JoCoCruiseCrazy in the Caribbean. And I’m nearly finished with my second book, on a topic unrelated to Microsoft.

But after that I don’t have anything lined up. I’m going to see what happens.

My team will continue its work as always, there will be no interruption. In the meantime don’t worry, we have top men working on an orderly transition. Top men.*

After almost 18 years There’s too many people to thank. First and foremost CSS for my start at Microsoft in the Las Colinas office. TwC for my wonderful time there working at the Microsoft Security Response Center. I’d like to thank Xbox, my team and the entire staff of my wonderful enforcers who work so tirelessly to help protect the Xbox LIVE service. It’s been an incredible privilege and honor to work with people so friendly, dedicated, and nearly impervious to naughty Internet slang.

I’d like to thank Microsoft for an unbelievable set of opportunities, an incredible education that they paid *me* to obtain, and for the opportunity to be neck deep for five years in my first love: video games.

My leaving’s not tied to any event or thing, so I’m not out the door just yet! Please feel free to drop by or chat. After the 15th you can reach me at Stepto@stepto.com. But be aware I probably won’t be able to answer you until I arrive back in Seattle on the 28th because I’ve always been the guy that checks my email on the beach and I’m not going to be that guy anymore.

I wish you all the very best success. Godspeed and please…

Be excellent to each other.

S.

*I apologize for the gender specificity, but it’s a movie quote. I’ll let you go Bing it. :>

Modern Warfare 3 Weapon Rebalancing and More on “Panic Knifing”

Modern Warfare 3′s creative strategist, Robert Bowling, discusses panic knifing, quickscoping, weapon balancing, and potential nerf to Type-95. Earlier today, we reported on Bowling’s suggestions on how to deal with panic knifing. In a nutshell, Bowling suggested that players should be careful when walking around corners. This advice aggravated one fan to jokingly demand Bowling to remove corners all together. Robert’s response was quite amusing, “roger. Got it, the answer to camping is to remove all corners. Call of Duty: Circle Warfare will be amazing.” Now that panic knifing is under the magnifying glass, one fan suggested that everyone hates it. Bowling disagreed, “the guy doing the knifing is loving it.” Another fan tried to persuade Bowling by bringing up the realism argument in regards to knifing, Robert answered “that’s the thing about war in video games and war in real life. One is fun; the other is real.” In terms of quickscoping, some players believe that there is a difference in quickscoping mechanics between semi-automatic rifles and bolt actions, Robert refuted these claims, “I don’t believe so. It should be the same mechanic.”

One fan approached Bowling with an interesting observation, basically he stated that Treyarch “messed up” Black Ops by “nerfing everything.” To which, Bowling responded, “I agree that weapon rebalancing should be a very selective process.” I don’t believe that Bowling is criticizing Treyarch, but offering his thoughts on the weapon rebalancing process to be more conservative. As previously mentioned, no additional tweaks are planned at the moment. Read more about the weapon balancing in patch 1.08, which will be released soon on PS3 and PC. One weapon that is still considered to be overpowered is the Type-95, Bowling stated “We haven’t discussed any additional nerfs beyond the slight one we made a few updates ago.” Type 95′s hipspread was slightly reduced back in December.
